Polyvagal theory

A few years ago I reached a turning point. Mentally and physically I couldn’t ignore the signals of a permanent hyper alert nervous system. I realized that I was surviving by people pleasing: avoiding conflicts, ignoring myself & my needs and not putting any limits. As a result the tension on my nervous system became unsustainable and intolerable.

Rest

I decided to step on the brake and began starting to understand, recognize, acknowledge and heal. I discovered the power of (mindful) breathing, of movement, of allowing deep rest, connection and vulnerability. This aligned perfectly when I learned more about the polyvagal theory.

Vagus

The polyvagal theory by Dr. Porges considers that our nervous system maintains different defense mechanisms when we experience stress. That’s why “poly” means “more”. It’s also called "the science of safety”.

The vagus nerve is a very long nerve and therefore influences several processes, like breathing, talking, digesting, swallowing, your heartbeat and blood pressure. Whenever your vagus nerve is working properly, the nerve creates relaxation. Whenever your vagus nerve is overstimulated and weakened, every stressful stimulus will feel like a drop in the ocean.

Safety

Neuroception is the process of permanently scanning for signals of safety and danger - mainly unconsciously. It’s only when we feel safe that we’re able to be calm, to enjoy, to play, to talk, to connect. In those moments our ventral nerve cord is active.

Understanding the theory has played a significant role in order to change. I’m a self-employed goldsmith for almost ten years, but before that, I was a teacher for many years. Sharing knowledge in an accessible way is my favorite thing to do. I followed a course at the Polyvagal Institute, which was an invitation to complete relaxation and afterwards I felt an immense urge to share the information that I gained.
